The World Famous Winter Road

The Winter Road haul on the ice road in the Northwest Territories is one of our most highly sought after seasonal positions by Professional Drivers and support staff all around the world.

This annual Yellowknife-based operation, known as the Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road located in the Northwest Territories (NT), is when we haul fuel and other commodities to diamond mines such as Gahcho Kue, Ekati, and Diavik, across the ice road which is created and maintained by our construction team at RTL Construction.

This position will focus on the Yellowknife-based winter road operation, known as the Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road located in the Northwest Territories (NT). We haul to diamond mines such as Gahcho Kue, Ekati, and Diavik.

Engineered to support light vehicle loads at approximately 70cm+ (27-28 inches) increasing to full weights as the ice thickens, exceeding 99cm (42 inches).

Ice

Loaded trucks – 25 km/h (15 mph) with some areas 10 km/h; empty trucks – 60 km/h (35 mph) on “Express Lanes” – which are return (southbound lanes) built on larger lakes

Portages (land)

Mandatory portage speed is 30 kph, with trucks having to slow to 10 kph on and off portage

  • Edmonton to Yellowknife 1500 km – 16-18 hours
  • Yellowknife to the mines 15 – 18 hours depending on the mine location
  • From the mine back to Yellowknife (unloaded) 10 – 14 hours depending on the mine
  • From the mine to Yellowknife (loaded) 15 – 18 hours depending on the mine location

*All listed times are approximations only and are provided to give prospective drivers an idea of how long a trip can take; every trip, however, can be different based on a variety of factors (location of mine, weather, load variations, etc.)

The hours indicated above are due to the slow speeds the Drivers are traveling: 25 km/h (15 mph) – 60 km/h (35 mph)

Safety on and off the road is paramount to both KAG Canada and the Joint Venture managing the Winter Road.
All drivers are required to read, fully understand, and agree to comply with the Winter Road Regulations and Rules of the Road; drivers must always have a copy of these with them.

This road is labelled as one of the Safest Roads in North America.
