KAG Canada Deploys IFS’ Hydrogen-Fueled Class 8 Heavy-Duty Truck in Commercial Operations
March 25, 2025
Edmonton Metro Region [March 25, 2025] — KAG Canada and Innovative Fuel Systems (IFS) announced that KAG Canada’s commercial operation is successfully using a hydrogen dual-fuel-powered heavy-duty (HD) truck powered by IFS’ patented Multi-Fuel Technology Platform (MFTP™). Since December 2024, KAG Canada has operated the truck to haul fuel to Edmonton International Airport (YEG).
For more than three-and-a-half years, KAG Canada has been using IFS’ MFTP™ with natural gas fuel to reduce emissions and achieve an average fuel cost savings of 15%. MFTP™ is a retrofit system that can be used on existing HD trucks, allowing a diesel engine to offset diesel fuel usage with cleaner burning fuels like natural gas (in the form of CNG) or renewable natural gas (RNG), and IFS’ new MFTP™ model can incorporate hydrogen fuel, providing HD fleets with an additional cleaner burning fuel option.
IFS’ MFTP™ is proving essential for fleets aiming to decarbonize their existing HD trucks. According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, HD trucks currently contribute approximately 6.6% of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions. IFS’ MFTP™ system provides fleet operators with an effective way to reduce emissions without replacing their existing vehicles.
IFS’ MFTP™ technology provides heavy-duty fleets with multiple fuel options for offsetting diesel fuel. The natural gas MFTP™ technology provides HD fleets with CO2 reductions and up to 25% fuel savings. Alternately, the hydrogen MFTP™ technology is available for fleets that want to use hydrogen fuel in their HD trucks, and it aligns with the 5,000 Hydrogen Vehicle Challenge, an initiative aimed at deploying 5,000 hydrogen-powered or dual-fuel vehicles on Western Canadian roads by 2030.
IFS will continue to collaborate with KAG Canada and other industry leaders to expand the use of cleaner burning alternative fuels like hydrogen, natural gas, or RNG.

Quotes
“With close to 4 years of proven commercial operational results for HD fleets in Canada and the United States, our best-in-class MFTP™ technology is the only commercially viable technology that can economically reduce CO2 emissions for existing HD diesel trucks, while also providing lowest total cost of ownership. KAG Canada, with their vision of focusing on their carbon footprint, has been a key partner in the commercialization of our technology.” — Leland Oberst, President and Chief Executive Officer
“When it comes to the future of cleaner burning alternative fuel, I am confident that industry will advance this decision based on infrastructure, alternative fuel supply and price. In partnership with Innovative Fuel Systems, we have now successfully tested hydrogen and are currently commercially utilizing natural gas (in the form of CNG) on several units in Western Canada as well as Eastern Canada.” — Chris Chapman, Vice President of Fleet Services, KAG Canada
“The Edmonton region has become a centre of excellence for hydrogen technology, innovation, and deployment. KAG and IFS are demonstrating the region’s leadership in Canada’s hydrogen economy by showcasing practical applications, reducing emissions from HD transportation, and building confidence among fleets adopting hydrogen.” — Brent Lakeman, Executive Director, Edmonton Region Hydrogen HUB
“We’re proud to be part of driving this movement — propelling clean energy and economic growth. The future of hydrogen isn’t distant; it’s unfolding now, and our region is leading the way.” – Myron Keehn, President & CEO, Edmonton International Airport (YEG)
About Innovative Fuel Systems
IFS (www.innovativefuelsystems.com) is an Edmonton-based, privately-owned cleantech company that provides innovative solutions to reduce CO2 emissions and fuel costs for heavy-duty (HD) trucks. IFS’ MFTP™ retrofits Class 8 HD diesel engines to operate with compressed natural gas (CNG) or renewable natural gas (RNG) and can also integrate other cleaner-burning fuels, such as hydrogen. IFS’ strong patent applications, sophisticated programming, and proprietary methodology enable it to retrofit existing HD fleets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fuel costs.
